Hello, my name is Ali Waezi. I am thirteen years old and I am my parents’ eldest son. I have two little sisters and a baby brother. We are Hazaras, an ethnic minority and Shia Muslims. We live in Afghanistan in the Ghazni province, home to a big Hazara community.

My father runs a small grocery shop in the main street with my Uncle Hamid. In the mornings he walks with my sisters and me to school on his way to the shop. We walk home from school alone and I am in charge of making sure my sisters are safe. My mother stays at home with my baby brother and cooks delicious food.
